The Kusarigama is a traditional Japanese weapon consisting of a Kama. The Japanese equivalent of the sickle) equipped with a metal chain (Kusari) with an iron hammer at its end (Fundo). The Kusarigama is said to have been developed during the Muromachi period.

To carry an attack, it is necessary to drag and swing the chain with the mass, by carrying out large circles above the head, then to whip to entangle the spear, the saber or any other weapon and/or to immobilize the arms or the legs of the opponent.

This allows its user to easily dash forward to hit it with the Kama (Sickle). It is also possible to strike by throwing the mace directly with the chain, causing serious or mortal wounds to his opponent, while remaining out of reach of his saber or spear.

The art of manipulating the Kusarigama is called Kusarigamajutsu.

What is Tekkan - Kabutowari:

THE Tekkan, would be the evolution of a strange weapon used on the battlefields and allegedly made by the famous "Goro Nyudo Masamune". This ancient weapon was composed of iron bars tied with a cord, on a wooden handle. The warriors rotated the weapon and struck, with a violent blow, the iron helmets of the adversaries.

Kabutowari literally means "breaking the Kabuto", the iconic Samurai helmet, but this is more myth than reality. On the battlefields, the warriors wore Kabuto and armor, however this equipment was certainly too robust to be able to be cracked or split with weapons as light as the Kabutowari. This weapon was also widely used by merchants and farmers, who were prohibited by law from carrying or even possessing most edged weapons, especially swords.

These weapons (resembling a Jitte), often called Hachiwari or Kabutowari, had thick, curved metal blades with blunt edges and a hook near the base of the handle. Kabutowari generally measured between 35 and 45cm long.

During a fight, the hilt, the rod and the hook were used either, to parry the sword of an opponent, or to catch the cords, to separate the plates of armor or to tear off a helmet, leaving the vulnerable adversary. The curved, pointed blade also made it possible to access and pierce unprotected or weaker areas of Japanese armor, such as the opening located just in the armpit area.

The Tessen were favored by the Samurai and used in places where it was not allowed or possible to bring a sword, guaranteeing them to always be armed. In the Edo period, the Tessen were very popular and used by high-ranking Samurai, who could not use their swordsor by the Samurai, who preferred to use it against opponents of lower rank, since using a saber against them was considered unseemly.

After the Haitorei(Government edict prohibiting sabers, March 28, 1876), this weapon experienced a new craze.
