It relates to the animal of the Japanese zodiac: the boar, which is the 12th and last sign of the horoscope. This symbol that is found almost everywhere in traditional and sacred architecture (Temple, sanctuary), on the Tsuba, the Kogatana etc... (Auspicious sign) is called " I no me ” (Either: boar’s eye) 猪目. Ornament frequently encountered at the Bugu level for the protection of armed men. But, by extrapolation, it must also have been used as Monsho or Kamon (Family Crest)

  • Quality: Good

  • Status :  Bon

  • Defaults :Small chips of lacquer on the end of the 2 Fukigaeshi (Ears), tie cord and lining in poor condition, in their "jus"

The Gunbai, also known as Gunbai-uchiwa, was a kind of war fan, used by Daimyo, Taisho (generals) and Gashira (officers), worn to show their rank and used to command their troops of Samurai and Ashigaru on and off the battlefield. By medieval Japanese warrior troop commanders to lead troops during battle maneuvers, it was also a symbol of power.

Gunbai were of various sizes and shapes and made from raw or lacquered wood, with or without decorative metal fittings, or solid metal. Often, they were decorated with symbols, such as family crests, maxims, or invocations to different gods. The Gunbai used by tactician Kuroda Kanbei even featured a compass inside the wooden handle. Another type of whip-shaped signaling device was known as Saihai.

Gunbai were typically family heirlooms, handed down successively from father to son. These Gunbai were unique. The Iron Gunbai in particular could also be used as a defensive weapon, to protect against surprise attacks, sabers and arrows.

Historical review :

The Abumi, Japanese stirrups, were used in Japan from the 5th century, by the class of Samurai of feudal Japan. The Abumi were an equipment, with the Japanese saddle (Kura), essential for riding.

The stirrups (they entered the whole feet) were fixed to the saddle, shaped in such a way as to allow the water to flow since they had to cross many rivers, torrents… during the fights.

The military version of this open stirrup, called Shitanaga Abumi, was used in the middle of the Heian period. They were slimmer, had a deeper toe box and an even longer and flatter foot plate. It is not known why the Japanese developed this unique style of stirrup, but this stirrup remained in use until the introduction of European-style stirrups in the late 19th century.

The Abumi had a very distinct swan shape, curved upwards and backwards and allowing a leather strap to be passed over the instep, so that the rider could maintain good balance.

Most surviving Abumi from this period are made entirely of iron, inlaid with designs in silver or other materials, and covered with lacquer.

In some cases, an iron piece near the heel prevented the foot from slipping. Stirrups called “Suiba Abumi” are sometimes perforated to let water out, when crossing rivers. There are also stirrups with a hole in the front allowing the shaft of a spear or a banner to be slid into them.

BAJO-GASAN JINGASA:

At the time, it was exceptional and very expensive to be able to afford a horse and therefore to carry a Bajo Jingasa. “My Kuyo” (Navagraha)

The Japanese believed that the Navagraha could protect them against demons. The "Mon Kuyo" was used by many Samurai and warlords throughout history, such as the Hosokawa, the lords of Kumamoto, or by the Soma clan. Many warriors have also adopted the "Mon Kuyo" because it could symbolize the 9 cuts made with a Katana: Shomen (vertical) attack and backhand, Kesa-giri (diagonal) left and right and their backhands, Doh-giri ( horizontal) left and right, and Tsuki (thrust).
