THE "NIHON BIJUTSU TOKEN HOZON KYOKAI" - NBTHK :

ThereNBTHKor " Society for the Preservation of Japanese Sword Art " is a Japanese government agency whose mission is the registration and preservation of ancientjapanese swords.

I'Agency for Cultural Affairsfounded NBTHK in 1948, in response toally banabout Japanese swords after World War II.

The NBTHK holds annual competitions for contemporary swordsmiths, which form the high point of the Japanese sword-making calendar. A success in this competition is a high distinction.

The Society issues certifications for antique swords. There are four levels of classification in this system : Hozon (worthy of preservation), Tokubetsu hozon (work of high value worthy of protection), Juyo token (Important sword) and Tokubetsu juyo token (Value and utmost importance). Certification by the NBTHK can increase the resale value of a sword tenfold. The NBTHK is also responsible for the Japanese Sword Museum located in Tokyo.
